Clear aligners like Smile Shapers are designed to gradually guide your teeth into better alignment. But what if the process feels slower than expected—or worse, like nothing’s happening at all? It can be frustrating, especially if you’ve followed all the rules. But don’t worry, there are several possible reasons your treatment isn’t progressing as planned, and most of them have simple solutions. Here’s what could be happening.
1. You’re Not Wearing Them Long Enough
This is the most common reason for slow results. Clear aligners need to be worn for 20 to 22 hours per day to be effective. That means only removing them for meals, drinks (except water), and brushing.
Even just a few hours off per day can add up, delaying progress. If you’ve been a little lax with your wear time, don’t beat yourself up. Just recommit and get back on track!
2. You Skipped a Set of Aligners
Aligners are meant to be worn in a very specific order. Each set builds on the movement created by the last. If you skipped ahead or accidentally got your trays out of order, your teeth might not be in the right position to move forward. This could cause discomfort, poor fit, and lead to unplanned movements that slow your treatment.
If you suspect this may have happened, let your dentist know as soon as possible. They can assess whether you can simply backtrack or if they’ll need to adjust your plan.
3. Your Trays Aren’t Seated Well
Your trays should “snap” onto your teeth comfortably but snugly. If they feel loose or don’t sit flush against your teeth, something may be off. Poor tray fit can prevent your teeth from getting the pressure they need to move.
This may be due to many issues like damage to the aligners themselves, heat warping in the plastic, or—rarely—a design error. Your dentist can check and reorder a better-fitting set if needed.
4. Your Teeth Are Stubborn
Every smile is different. Some teeth are more resistant to movement than others, especially if they’re twisted, crowded, or have deep roots. If that’s the case, your dentist may adjust your treatment plan, add attachments (small enamel-colored bumps that help apply pressure), or extend your wear time.
Sticking with your treatment plan and communicating early can make all the difference in reaching your dream smile. So, if you feel like your aligners aren’t working, don’t keep it to yourself. Reach out to your dentist for a follow-up visit. They’ll be happy to examine your trays and teeth to figure out what’s going on and help get things moving again—literally.
